How to profit from what people naturally do anyways…

I was in Iceland last month. Great country.

My wife and I stopped for a few days on our way back from a European trip.

Beautiful landscapes, friendly people, and delicious food (including whale meat, which is incredible.)

We rented a car. Shitty little Romania SUV with a tiny diesel engine and a 6 speed manual. Studded tires. The roof leaked.

And we did what one does in Iceland. Drove around and saw the sights.

Driving down a road in the countryside, we saw something off to the side of the road. Horses.

Specifically, the small, wooly horses that Iceland is know for. (You can also eat them there. We didn’t.)

As I pulled over to look at the horses, I naturally looked around to make sure the farmer wasn’t watching. That there weren’t any “no trespassing” or “do not feed the animals” signs. (Not that I would have understood them if they were in Icelandic.)

Instead of that, I got a pleasant surprise. The farmer had cleared a wide gravel parking area and driveway to and from the main road. The horses were in a small pen right next to this, with no room to move away from us.

There was a sign in Icelandic, English, and Chinese, saying that the horses were friendly and loved to be pet and touched.

Next to that, one of those quarter gumball machines filled with some kind of horse treats.

This wasn’t the best idea, as almost nobody uses cash in Iceland, but at least it was something. (Maybe it took Euros?)

Instead of trying to drive away the hoards of pesky tourists coming onto his land and taking pictures with his horses, as so many people would, this farmer decided to welcome them, AND make a bit of extra money at the same time.

Seems like common sense, but so many businesses seem to miss easy opportunities like this. Especially in customer service.

The example I’ll pick on today? The broadcast emails that go out with a reply to address of “noreply@(domain).”

How hard would it be to simply have replies go to Contact or Support?

How many opportunities are being missed by not ending emails with a call to action? “Reply to this message and tell me about… whatever.”

Instead, when people reply with a question, or a request, or a comment, or anything else, they get that awkward sending failed message from their email provider. Ouch.

The natural response to reading an email that speaks to us is to reply. So let people reply!

And when they do, send them something that will make you more money!

This is just one example, but there are all kinds of opportunities like this.

Opportunities for engagement AND profit.

Neglected to avoid someone having to “handle” a few extra “garbage” emails a day.
